Sheered Heels
Sheered Heels in Horses
Sheered heels, also called sheared heels, occur when one heel bulb is pushed upward relative to the other, creating an uneven heel structure. This painful condition can cause chronic lameness if not addressed.
What Are Sheered Heels?
In a healthy hoof, both heel bulbs should be level and symmetrical. With sheered heels, one side of the heel is displaced upward, creating a visible height difference and causing pain and instability.
Common Causes
- Hoof imbalance
- Uneven landing pattern
- Conformational issues
- Improper trimming or shoeing
- Chronic lameness in the opposite leg
- Working on uneven surfaces
Identifying Sheered Heels
- One heel bulb higher than the other
- Crack or separation between the heel bulbs
- Lameness or shortened stride
- Sensitivity in the heel area
- Uneven hoof wear
