Quarter Cracks
Quarter Cracks in Horses
Quarter cracks are vertical splits in the hoof wall that occur in the quarter region (the side of the hoof between the toe and heel). These cracks can range from superficial to deep and may cause significant lameness.
Understanding Quarter Cracks
Quarter cracks develop due to a great number of reasons, among them are: bruising, injuries, abscesses, stress and imbalance in the hoof wall. They can be very painful, especially if they extend into the sensitive structures of the hoof, and require proper management to heal.
Common Causes
- Hoof imbalance
- Improper shoeing or trimming
- Dry, brittle hooves
- Trauma or injury
- Poor hoof quality
- Excessive hoof wall stress
Signs of Quarter Cracks
- Visible crack in the hoof wall
- Lameness (if crack is deep)
- Sensitivity when pressure is applied
- Bleeding or discharge (in severe cases)
- Difficulty holding shoes
How We Can Help
Ideally, we'd love to see horses using our pads before quarter cracks ever become an issue. Our hybrid PLUS pads are designed not only for comfort and support, but also to help prevent the common causes of quarter cracks in the first place.
If your horse already has a quarter crack, our PLUS pads—featuring integrated rare earth neodymium magnets and copper—can help speed up recovery by increasing circulation to the feet and reducing inflammation. Healthier circulation means faster, stronger hoof growth and a better chance at long-term healing.
For even more support, our new Magnet Bell Boots are a great companion product. They provide additional circulation benefits and help reduce inflammation even further—giving your horse the best shot at a full recovery.
